Spammers use programs (robots) aka: (webbots) to scan the internet and collect e-mail addresses where to send their spam to.
Lists of fake e-mail addresses for those robots to read stuff their servers...
If enough such lists are created and spread around the internet...
the efficiency of the spammers' robots will be close to null, since most of the addresses they will find will lead to nowhere.
